Overland Park, Kansas (Oct. 8, 2024) — The already-robust partnership group of one local accounting and financial advisory firm just got a little larger, as MarksNelson Advisory welcomed Gina James, a new partner in the Tax Department, on Sept. 17.

With more than 25 years of accounting and tax experience, James will focus her efforts on enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of internal data assessments, planning processes and overall operations of clients across several industries, including real estate, construction, golf and restaurants.

“I’m so excited about working with 25 other local partners, who are collaborating every day in one centralized location,” James said. “This team brings a wide breadth of experience, which allows us to provide a better service offering. After all, when you have that many experts in a room, you’re always going to have a more thorough answer at the end of the day.” Prior to joining MarksNelson Advisory, James served as the controller for The National Golf Club of Kansas City and also owned her own CPA firm for more than 12 years. She previously spent nearly five years at one of the nation’s largest professional services firms, most recently as the office managing partner. While she wasn’t necessarily looking for a change, she said, the opportunity was one she couldn’t pass up.

“MarksNelson has a fantastic reputation, especially in real estate, which is my specialty area,” she said. “I had been competing against them for years, so I knew it was a good organization with a strong real estate niche.”

She said she’s especially excited about applying her decades of real estate experience to both residential and commercial real estate, serving both the brokerage and developer sides of the transaction. Her expertise includes helping clients find ways to fund their projects, such as leveraging incentives, taxation codes, depreciation and cost segregation.

“Probably one of the biggest highlights of making this move is being able to reconnect with my clients and serve them holistically — going through their business and helping them as their trusted advisor,” she said. “I always strive to learn their pain points and concerns so I can appropriately address them.”

Josh Beck, Managing Partner at MarksNelson Advisory, said James was sought specifically for the unique advantages she could bring to not only the firm but to its clients.

“Gina’s extensive expertise and experience, coupled with her dedication to the success of her clients and team, make her an excellent fit for MarksNelson Advisory,” Beck said. “We’re thrilled to welcome her to our growing firm.”

As a former student at UMKC and a graduate of Park University, James said she’s gratified to join a local team that embraces the entrepreneurial spirit that has played such a large role in the firm’s dramatic growth over recent years.

“There’s just so much opportunity here for a younger partner to grow,” she said. “Everyone here is not only impressive but also kind and genuine and working toward a common goal. It’s inspiring for someone coming in, and I’m thrilled to be at the beginning of this journey.”
